André Wendland
b. 1995, Germany
Lives and works in Karlsruhe (DE)
André Wendland works with a playful visual language inspired by cartoons and pop culture. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Karlsruhe in the class of Tatjana Doll, completing his diploma in 2023 and continuing as her master student in 2024. From 2021 to 2024 he received a scholarship from the Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes.
His paintings are often large scale and image filling, created in small series. He experiments with forms and color areas to develop harmonious, figurative compositions. Wittiness and humor are present, though narrative is not always central.
Wendland frequently exhibits in public spaces, adapting his work to the surrounding context to create cohesive installations. His artistic practice experienced a significant stylistic change around 2020, while his interest in brushwork, color and the playful energy of cartoons has remained constant.
