Lives and works in Berlin (DE)
Lukasz Furs is an ultra-contemporary conceptual artist and painter. His first documented exhibition was versus at the HFBK Gallery in Hamburg (2009), and his most recent known exhibition to date was 15 Years of Schau Fenster in Berlin (2025). Over the course of his career, Furs has had at least three solo exhibitions and 25 group exhibitions across Europe, and has participated in biennials in Spain. He has also been nominated for several art awards, and his works have been shown in art associations.
This body of work engages with the digital placeholder, transferring it as a functional, content-empty interface element into the analog space of painting, where its status is renegotiated. The starting point of the works is a standardized placeholder image, as it appears in digital environments when an image is missing, still loading, or unavailable. Through its translation into acrylic painting on canvas, this technical symbol loses its neutrality and becomes a physical, singular object. The absence indicated by the placeholder becomes a presence in itself: visible, material, and exhibit-able.
Similar works and concepts recur throughout the artist’s oeuvre. The works are situated within the context of a digital image culture in which images are continuously produced, loaded, replaced, and shifted. Here, the placeholder becomes a mode of thought: an image without content that structures perception. It refuses narration and message, opening a space for reflection on images, meaning, and the conditions that shape them.
