Max Grote
b. 2003, Germany
Lives and works in Hamburg (DE)
Max Grote’s paintings combine the visual language of Renaissance and Early Dutch Baroque portraiture with elements of Dark Fantasy and contemporary self-staging. Centered around self portraiture, his works depict theatrical alter egos, knights, angels or mythical figures, oscillating between sincerity and irony.
Working with carefully structured compositions, Grote contrasts precisely rendered figures with dissolving, fluid backgrounds, treating identity as something unstable and continuously in formation. Influenced by Susan Sontag’s concept of “Camp,” his practice explores performance, self image and the desire for artistic permanence through exaggerated and symbolic imagery.
Born in Berlin and raised in Potsdam, Grote studied fashion design at Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weißensee before turning to painting. Since 2024 he has been studying at the HfbK Hamburg.
