Ant Hamlyn

b. 1993, Northampton (UK)
lives and works in Lewes, East Sussex

Hamlyn’s practice is centred on an ongoing investigation into soft sculpture as a means of exploring the fragility and impermanence of life. Through meticulously hand-sewn sculptural forms, the artist examines states of vulnerability, transience, and emotional tension, often drawing upon botanical structures, historical references, and metaphorical imagery. His works occupy a material and conceptual space in which softness and rigidity, memory and nostalgia, intimacy and unease are held in delicate balance.

Characterised by their tactile presence and psychological ambiguity, Hamlyn’s sculptures invite close and prolonged viewing. Their suspended, almost theatrical stillness creates moments in which the familiar and the uncanny coexist, producing a heightened awareness of material, scale, and spatial perception. With the exception of several large-scale inflatable installations, each work is painstakingly handmade, underscoring a sustained commitment to process and craftsmanship that remains central to the practice. Through this careful negotiation of materiality and form, Hamlyn constructs immersive sculptural environments that challenge conventional distinctions between object and organism, permanence and decay, attraction and discomfort.

Hamlyn has presented work internationally through solo exhibitions and projects with institutions and galleries including Moosey, Weserhalle, Yusto Giner, The Hole, and Museum of Museums. His work has also been featured at international fairs and exhibitions including Art Busan, Art Shanghai, UVNT Art Fair, and Mediterranea 18.
