Onno Meeuwsen
b. 2002, Netherlands
Lives and works in Utrecht (NL)
Onno Meeuwsen redefines the genre of still life by combining classical painting techniques with contemporary themes inspired by his experiences within the LGBTQIA+ community. His vibrant and highly detailed compositions of everyday objects merge precision with playful and provocative narratives. His creative process begins with the careful staging of objects, which he photographs before transforming them into oversized painted compositions.
In 2024, Meeuwsen graduated from the Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht with his graduation exhibition Post Nut Regret, a body of work he seamlessly continued with Post Nut Clarity, his first solo exhibition at BETTER GO SOUTH in Berlin. Throughout 2023 and 2024, he participated in numerous group exhibitions across the Netherlands, including Echter! at Moving Galleries in Utrecht and Exposure at HKU Utrecht. He was also selected for the renowned Best of Graduates exhibition at Galerie Ron Mandos in Amsterdam, which annually highlights the country’s most outstanding graduates. Another notable presentation was his work The Diamond Dress, exhibited in Utrecht Cathedral during its renovation period.
