Wei Zhu
b. 1996, China
Lives and works in Hamburg (DE)
Exploring the quiet tension of everyday moments, Zhu composes paintings that balance calmness with subtle unease. Soft color palettes and precise arrangements invite the viewer to linger on the emotional currents beneath seemingly ordinary scenes.
Her practice draws on personal experiences of distance and belonging, reflecting on how memory and perception shape the idea of home. Fragments of imagery from social media and digital culture are transformed into serene yet fragile compositions, where the logic of consumerism dissolves into reflective spaces.
Recent work considers the challenges faced by Generation Z, investigating identity, emptiness and vulnerability. Exhibitions in Germany, Switzerland and China have highlighted her sensitivity to the interplay of observation, memory and emotional resonance in the construction of intimate visual narratives.
